Long-Tailed Tits - Our Early Nesters

3 Feb 2026

Long-tailed tits – our early nesters

One of the UK’s favourite birds, these tiny tits weigh between 7-9 grams, that’s lighter than a £1 coin! Lovingly referred to as ‘flying teaspoons’ thanks to their shape, they live in chatty family groups, constantly calling to one another.

They are absolute nesting superstars and build one of the most intricate nests of any UK garden birds. These dome shaped, or spherical wonders can take up to three weeks to build from moss, lichen and spider silk. A clever piece of engineering, the nest expands as the brood inside grows, which is rather handy as there can sometimes be as many as 12 chicks.

Mum and dad long-tailed tit, usually have one brood a year and work as a partnership, raising their young. If their nest fails, other adult members of their family or neighbours will help to feed chicks.

In their natural habitat, they tuck into small insects and spiders, but love nothing more than visiting our gardens for seeds, seed blend and feeders.

Long-tailed tits are resident in the UK through the winter, although their numbers can drop in extreme temperatures. Numbers, thankfully, are restored during the breeding season, which starts with nest-building in mid-to-late February with egg laying in March or early April.
