Helping your garden birds to keep hydrated and healthy

Water is vital for the survival of our garden birds. While most of us realise that they need it for drinking and bathing, the fact that they need water to help maintain healthy feathers is not always so well known.  However, clean feathers are essential for flight and insulation.

Putting a bird bath and drinking bottle in your outside space can help our feathered friends remain hydrated when they visit your garden:

1Hydration: Like all living creatures, birds need water to survive. They are constantly losing moisture through respiration and droppings, so they really do need to keep topped up with fluids. A bird bath or water drinker hung from a branch or feeding station is a great way to make sure they get a vital hydration boost.

2Bathing and preening:  Putting a bird bath in the garden helps birds to keep clean, removing dirt, parasites and any loose feathers. It’s important that feathers are kept in good condition as they are essential for flight, as well as insulation and waterproofing.

3Keeping cool: On hot summer days, a bird bath can help birds to regulate their body temperatures.

4Quenching thirst when food is dry: Bird food by its nature can be dry, so put out a water drinker or bird bath to provide a welcome drink.
