The Nightingale is a fabulous songster thats more frequently heard than seen. They are secretive birds that breed mostly south of the Severn - wash line and east from Dorset to Kent, higest density found in Essex, Suffolk,Norfolk, Kent & Sussex.

They arrive in April, sing until late May - early June then leave around July/August time. They can be heard singing during the day & night.

Adult A warm rufous - brown crown & upperparts, that merge with creamy underparts. They have a characteristic rust-red long rounded tail
Juvenile paler upper and lower body with scaly markings.
Size 16 - 17cms
Bill brown, short & pointed
Legs grey medium in length
Habitat heaths, woodlands, impenetrable bushes or thickets
Behaviour skulky, flits, takes off & lands from vegetation

Voice long song of liquid trills, with peeoo notes at the begining and harsh tcak & whooeet notes

Nest well hidden close to the ground
Eggs 4 - 5; mottled reddish
