Bullfinch – Pyrrhula pyrrhula
The Bullfinch is an unmistakable visitor to your garden and can be seen all year across the UK with the exception of the far north & west of Scotland.
Indentification
                             Male   Portly, bull necked bird the male bullfinch is distinctive with its bright pink breast and strong black crown cap, the upper back is pale grey and the rump is white. The wings are black, medium lengthen with a notch and have a bold white wing bar. The tail is also black with a white patch.
Female Similar in build but with pale pink- buff breast and pinkish grey back.
Size 14 - 15cm
Bill  black, short and stubby.
Legs  Black: medium in length
Habitat gardens, heaths, woods, hedges.
Behaviour  flits, takes off & landing on vegetation
Flocking 1 - 2
Flight undulating.
Voice  soft sad hue
Breeding
Nest  twig platforms in bushes.
Eggs lays 4-5 eggs on average, eggs are pale blue spotted purple.
Incubation period 12 – 14 days
Fledgling 12 - 18 days
Broods 1 - 2; April - May
Food buds, seeds, peanuts & pine nuts
